Rafah’s Pain is Our Pain

The deadly strike on our displaced Palestinian brothers, sisters and children in Rafah last Sunday 26th May was further illustration of the flagrant disregard for the lives of innocent civilians. The shocking images that continue to fill our screens are evocative of scenes of Armageddon, yet they are still not enough to provoke a cessation of this almost 9-month onslaught.

But we’ve been here before…

The annals of history remind us of horrific examples of oppression endured by past communities, and we have Quranic examples of their plights, such as those thrown into a pit of fire while their perpetrators stood by scoffing at and mocking them:

“They had nothing against them except that they (the victims) believed in Allah, the All-Mighty, worthy of all praise.” (Surah Al-Buruj, 85: 8)

Today, we continue to witness the remarkable faith and resolve of our Palestinian brothers and sisters in the face of the most heinous acts of violence and murder toward them. They are perfect reminders of our predecessors, and exemplars of faith today.

This is why we must not waver in our own faith nor wane in our resolve to stand for justice, remembering the divine verses that should evoke spiritual endurance:

“Or do you think that you will enter Paradise without such trials as came to those who passed away before you? They were afflicted with severe poverty and ailments and were so shaken that even the Messenger and those who believed along with him said; “When will come the Help of Allah?” Yes! Certainly, the Help of Allah is near!” Suratul Baqarah (2:214)

May Allah aid and support our brothers and sisters in this continued struggle, and bring justice and lasting peace to all in the region. If you would like to support the people of Palestine – you can do so here:
