PRESS RELEASE
GLMCC partners with Islamic Relief UK to distribute over 500 food parcels across Birmingham
Over 500 food parcels distributed to the most vulnerable in Birmingham by Green Lane Masjid & Community Centre (GLMCC) and Islamic Relief UK.
On Saturday 30th January 2021 we opened up our mosque to volunteers from GLMCC and Islamic Relief UK to prepare food parcels for the most vulnerable in the city. The food parcels contained food items for 2000 meals and were distributed to those most in need. Recipients of these packs included the homeless, foodbank users, asylum seekers, refugees and those suffering domestic abuse.
As a central hub for our community, we recognise that the economic burden on many families is immense due to the pandemic. Due to sickness and the loss of jobs, families are struggling to pay for basic necessities. In order to help during the pandemic, we have already extended our foodbank to run 7-days a week, providing essential supplies to those in need. Our foodbank is a lifeline for many and serves the community, regardless of faith and background.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘The most beloved people to Allah (God) are those who are most beneficial to people.’
Tufail Hussain, Director of Islamic Relief UK said:
“Green Lane Masjid plays an integral role in providing support to their local community, especially during the coronavirus crisis. With the number of coronavirus cases at an all-time, daily high in the UK, it is important – now more than ever – to stand together as a community and provide for those in need.
We are humbled that we had the opportunity to support Green Lane Masjid this weekend and provide up to 500 food packs to those who needed them most – whether for asylum seekers, the homeless, those who have been adversely affected or displaced by the coronavirus, or people suffering from domestic abuse.”
Saleem Ahmed, Head of Services and Welfare at Green Lane Masjid, said:
“Alhamdulillah (praise be to God), the masjid has been serving the wider community, Muslim and non-Muslim for many years. Our foodbank has been a vital resource for individuals and families who are experiencing food poverty. The pandemic has exacerbated the need for the food bank and so we have had to step up and run a 7-day foodbank and deliver food to those most in need. Alhamdulillah, this has all been possible with the support from Islamic Relief UK and we are deeply grateful to them for making our work possible.”
