Eid al-Fitr Prayer Announcement 2024

Based on the Prophetic saying “Observe fast on sighting it (the new moon) and break (fast) on sighting it (the new moon), but if the sky is cloudy for you, then complete the number (of thirty days)” we are pleased to announce that, as there has been no confirmed sightings of the moon, Eid al-Fitr will be on Wednesday 10th April 2024.

Due to waterlogged grass and more rain forecasted, we have made the difficult decision to cancel Eid prayers at Small Heath Park.

Consequently, there will be five separate congregational prayers at Green Lane Masjid, to accommodate the expected large number of attendees. Eid prayers will be held at the following times:

  • 6:30am           led by: Sh Ahsan Hanif
  • 7:30am           led by: Mustafa Abu Rayyan
  • 8:30am           led by: Qari Zakaullah Saleem
  • 9:30am           led by: Sh Aqeel Mahmoud
  • 10:30am         led by: Sh Hafeezullah Khan

Eid signifies the culmination of the month-long fasting in Ramadan, during which Muslims abstain from food and drink for 29 or 30 days. It stands as a joyous occasion, marked by feasting and jubilation spent alongside cherished family and friends.

Ramadan is widely recognised as a month of fasting for Muslims worldwide. This year, Muslims observed fasts lasting up to 15 hours each day. However, what many people may not be aware of is the significant emphasis on charity during Ramadan, both locally and globally.

Taskforce GLM (TFGLM), the humanitarian arm of Green Lane Masjid, comprises dedicated volunteers from various professional backgrounds. Working closely with NGO charity partners like Islamic Relief UK, TFGLM oversees the distribution of aid to communities in need, both domestically and internationally. This Ramadan, with the unwavering support of the local Muslim community, TFGLM successfully raised almost £900,000 to support humanitarian causes including assistance to the affected in Gaza.

Statement from Mohammed Saeed, Chair of Trustees at Green Lane Masjid:

“As we come together to celebrate Eid this year, our hearts are weighed down by the tragic crisis unfolding in Gaza. With over 30,000 lives lost and the looming threat of malnutrition and starvation, this Eid holds a sombre tone. Yet, in the face of such immense suffering, our community has united in solidarity with the Palestinian people.

I am immensely proud to announce that, through the incredible generosity of our community, we have raised nearly £900,000 this Ramadan alone to support humanitarian causes. This remarkable achievement is a testament to the compassion and empathy that define us as a community.

While this Eid may be different from previous years, our dedication to aiding those in need remains unwavering. The fundraising efforts undertaken reflect our commitment to providing assistance and hope to our Palestinian brothers and sisters during this challenging time.

As we gather with our families and loved ones to mark this auspicious occasion, let us not forget the plight of the Palestinian people. May this Eid bring comfort and solace to all those who are suffering, and may our collective efforts bring relief and aid to our brothers and sisters in Gaza.”

If you wish to donate towards our Palestinian brothers and sisters you can donate via the Taskforce GLM website.
