PRESS RELEASE: TASKFORCE GLM RAISING 250K FOR THE WORST HUMANITARIAN CRISIS ON EARTH
This winter Afghanistan is facing what the Director of the World Food Programme has described as “the worst humanitarian crisis on earth.” 22 million people – more than half of the population – are facing acute food insecurity in the next three months
Taskforce GLM (Green Lane Masjid’s humanitarian department) launched a £250,000 emergency aid campaign at the beginning of December and partnered with Islamic Relief, who are one of the DEC approved NGOs operating on the ground.
This Friday, 24th December, Taskforce GLM handed over a cheque for £100,000 to Islamic Relief to help with the relief effort.
An appeal from DEC stated 95% of people in Afghanistan do not have enough to eat, 1 million children are at risk of dying from malnutrition this winter and only 9.1% of the population have been fully Covid vaccinated. Families cannot afford to buy food and health services are struggling to treat the ill as medical supplies are critically lacking. Due to the collapse in the economy, people fled to find work but are now facing temperatures as low as -12 without any suitable shelter.
Liakat Younis, Head of Projects for Taskforce GLM commented “The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on December 20th passed a resolution to establish a Humanitarian Trust Fund and simultaneously launched an Afghanistan Food Security Programme all demonstrating the seriousness and gravity of the situation. If we are complaining of cold in England, imagine temperatures dropping to -12 with no blankets, no food and no cover. Millions of children and mothers are suffering from acute malnutrition, let’s try and reach them today.”
