#VisitMyMosque Open Day 2023

On Sunday the 24th of September, Green Lane Masjid and Community Centre will be holding a #VisitMyMosque open day, welcoming all to enjoy and learn about the host of activities inside a mosque.

#VisitMyMosque is part of a national campaign initiated by the Muslim Council of Britain to open Mosque doors to the public. This is a great opportunity for anyone from the community to visit a Mosque and experience the host of activities and worship that happens inside.

GLMCC offers a range of services to the local community, Muslim and Non- Muslim. Our welfare department offers a Food Bank, Community Kitchen, MacMillan Cancer Support, Joint Pain Clinic, Domestic Violence Counselling to name a few. We run Scouts, basketball, night prayers, community cohesion dinners and more from our community hall. The list of activities at GLMCC is extensive and thanks to the staff and volunteers who work endlessly, we reach full capacity in all our services.

A survey from the MCB revealed that over 90% of people in the UK had never visited a Mosque before. In Birmingham, Muslims make up just short of 22% of the population, according to the 2011 census. As one of the leading Mosques in Birmingham and in the UK, it is our duty to take part in the spirit of engagement and dialogue, by opening our doors. We hope to give members of the local community an engaging insight into the life of the Mosque and Islam, and help to promote greater understanding. There are many misconceptions about Islam, so such forums allow people to recognise and perceive Islam and Muslims in an authentic environment.

“A mosque is a place of worship and community care. Visit my Mosque Day is crucial in fostering good relations in the community, and we hope by being approachable and welcoming, we will facilitate developing interfaith and intercultural understanding in the community.” [Saleem Ahmed GLMCC]

With doors opening at 12pm, the day will include:

  • Presentation of all our work
  • Q & A session with an Imam
  • Tours of the Mosque
  • Prayer viewing
  • Islamic exhibition

Visitors are welcome to join at any time from 12pm. In 2022, the mosque attracted 100s of visitors that marvelled at the building, with its unusual classical architecture, its 2017 Conservation Award from the Victorian Society for renovation and preservation of the Mosque building and its Victorian identity. GLMCC often draws visitors from schools and the public throughout the year.

During the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Green Lane Masjid was selected as one of the locations for the ‘Key to the City’ project. Many visitors who had never been to a Mosque before, were able to discover the spiritual aspects of a Muslim place of worship. With the upcoming open day in September, we at GLMCC, want to convey the integral spiritual nature of a Mosque.

We look forward to welcoming anyone who would like to visit our Mosque!
