Time Commitment: This role is flexible and based on both your availability and the needs of the people we support.

BACKGROUND TO GLMCC:

Green Lane Masjid and Community Centre is a leading UK mosque situated in the heart of Birmingham serving the community since 1979. Operating from its award-winning grade II listed Victorian building, GLMCC fulfils its mission of inspiring, educating and serving through its educational college, outreach work, welfare services, youth work, international humanitarian wing, as well as its fully functional mosque which is attended by thousands every week.

1. Purpose of role:

Our Cancer Support Volunteers provide compassionate, culturally sensitive support to individuals and families affected by cancer within our local Muslim community. By volunteering with Green Lane Masjid’s Cancer Support Service, you will play a vital role in supporting people through their cancer journey - emotionally and spiritually.

2. Main responsibilities:

Emotional Support

• Offer a listening ear through regular, supportive conversations.
• Provide companionship to help reduce feelings of isolation and anxiety.
• Offer reassurance in a way that respects Islamic values, cultural needs, and individual preferences.
• Participate in supervised home visits alongside support workers (full training and safeguarding guidance provided).
• Assist with cancer support groups, and wellbeing activities
• Support event coordination tasks such as registration, feedback collection, and general logistics.
• Help maintain a welcoming, respectful, and culturally appropriate environment.

Support & Training

Volunteers will receive:
• Access to Macmillan and British Islamic Medical Association training.
• Ongoing support from Volunteer Coordinator.
• Personal development plans.
• Regular 1-1 wellbeing check-ins.
• Receive certificates and appreciation in recognition of your dedication.
• Confirmation letter of volunteering can be provided on request after six months.
