Press Release: GLMCC Eid Al-Fitr Prayer Announcement

5th May 2021

Green Lane Mosque and Community Centre (GLMCC) will not be holding the annual Celebrate Eid event in the park for Eid Al Fitr this year. The usual Celebrate Eid event held in Small Heath Park with an annual attendance of over 60,000 people would pose significant risks to the public this year due to Covid-19.

In its place, we will be holding prayers inside the mosque, as we did last year. We are expecting a large turnout and so have arranged six separate congregational prayers and sermons, starting from 6:00 am through to10:00 am on a registration-only basis.

Worshippers will only be in the mosque for a maximum of 20-30 minutes, allowing adequate time between the prayers for people to arrive and leave without clashing. We will use a registration system to ensure that we control the numbers at each prayer. Bookings for Eid prayer will not be made available until Eid has officially been announced, and the moon has been sighted.

Eid is a time for celebration, family and worship. We would like everyone to enjoy the day and have tried to make things as easy as possible. Our normal Covid operating measures will remain in place, such as social distancing, facemasks, individuals bringing their own prayer mats, a one-way system, closed wash areas, no hugs or handshakes etc. We still also advise those who may be ill or vulnerable to remain at home.

The Muslim community in Birmingham has done exceptionally well in adhering to the Government and Public Health guidelines to date. The community has been extremely patient during Ramadan, recognising the need to adhere to Covid regulations for the greater public benefit. The number of infected and deaths in Birmingham and the UK continues to fall, which is testimony to this. We encourage everyone to continue to adhere to the guidelines for everyone’s safety until we are out of this pandemic inshaAllah.

We would like to wish you all a blessed and a joyous Eid.

Eid Mubarak,

GLMCC Management
