Celebrate Eid: 100,000+ attendance!
On Sunday 25th June 2017, over 100,000 people descended upon Small Heath Park, Birmingham, to attend the Celebrate Eid event, a project of Green Lane Masjid & Community Centre (GLMCC). Muslims & non-Muslims from all over the UK, Europe and even as far out as Canada made the event one of Birmingham’s biggest celebration.
Speeches were made by Councillors Zaker Choudhry, Majid Mahmood, and John Clancy, the current leader of Birmingham City Council. Keynote addresses were made by Assistant Chief Constable of West Midlands Police, Sarah Boycott and Othman Moqbel, CEO of GLMCC’s official partner and sponsor, Human Appeal.
Following the prayer, a short sermon was given by the Head Imam of GLMCC, Qari Zakaullah Saleem and following this the festivities began. There was a large fairground area provided by Robert Wilkinson, a variety of food and bazaar stalls as well as Crazy Golf, Animal Man and Clay Pigeon Shooting for the thousands of children in attendance as well as the adults!
The event was an amazing success, going off without incident and showed following the tragic incidents that occurred in the UK over the past few weeks what can be achieved when a community comes together.
GLMCC would like to thank West Midlands Police, West Midlands Fire Service, St Johns Ambulance, I.S.A Support Services and all the other partners and agencies that helped to keep this event safe and incident free.
